The Global Network for Women Music Producers is an initiative to support women and non-binary music producers and help right the gender imbalance in their field.
Designed in consultation with partners in countries from around the world, the program will help overcome barriers in the music industry, and provide opportunities for support, discussion, networking and collaboration. The program will also serve as a resource for musicians and record labels who are looking to work with a female-identifying producer.
The Global Network for Female-Identifying Music Producers is a partnership with Sounds Australia, Music Estonia and producer liaison Belen Fasulis (Argentina).
Women and non-binary music producers from Australia, Argentina, Wales, Estonia and Canada met in Montreal and Toronto in September 2023 for an inspiring week of knowledge sharing and networking activities as part of the program.
“Supporting and empowering amazing professionals, creating opportunities for discussion and collaboration, and making connections for women and non-binary producers is at the heart of the Global Network. During our week together in Toronto and Montreal in September, we continued to build on what we started just over two years ago – an experience to be repeated!”
Heather Gibson, Executive Producer, Popular Music & Variety, Canada’s National Arts Centre
“Now is the time to address the harsh inequity in music production. I truly believe that elevating women and non-binary producers into the mainstream and under the spotlight would benefit and grow the entire industry for everyone.”
Maïa Davies, music producer and artist (Montreal, QC)
Caracol is a bilingual artist who walks her own path. Born to an Uruguayan father and a Swiss mother, the Montreal-based songwriter/producer received several prizes and nominations over the course of her career: Genie, JUNO, Canadian Indie Awards, Félix, Miroir, GAMIQ, Canadian Folk Awards, etc. The talented multi-instrumentalist has toured extensively in North America and Europe, both as a headliner and as support for Half Moon Run, Beacon (Ghostly), Toro y Moi, Serena Ryder, The Bangles and more.
Coming from a musical family, her journey began as a child with 12 years of classical violin training. During her teenage years, she played electric guitar in punk bands and started experimenting with songwriting. After a few years on the road as a semi-professional snowboarding athlete, she settled in Montreal where she studied Sound Design at Musitechnic School. After graduating, she landed a job as an assistant sound engineer at Audio Z Studios, where she acquired precious knowledge about recording, post-production and film music.
Around the same period, she started her 1st band DobaCaracol, a world-pop act that would quickly get signed and release a #1 hit in Quebec (“Étrange”) and receive a gold record. After three years of touring the world, the group dissolved and Caracol went on to pursue a solo career. To this day, she has released five international albums and a multitude of EPs and singles, while continuously developing her production and songwriting career in parallel: writing songs for other artists (David Myles, Vacay, Eli Rose, Ludovic Bourgeois, The Voice QC, Star Academy, Canada’s Got Talent) and producing music for film and television (ladymusic.ca). She participated in numerous songwriting camps, including : SOCAN Ke-Nekt Canada and Quebec, S.A.C, Foyer Foyer, Camp Potera, writing residencies with Gilles Vigneault, SOCAN house Los Angeles, Nashville and Paris.
During the pandemic, Caracol focused on elevating her production skills. In 2021, she graduated from Station Clip, an Ableton Certified School, and took additional online courses with producer Rachel K. Collier. She also obtained grants from CALQ and Canada Arts Council to develop an advanced live-performance / live-looping station (“The Mothership”) which also controls lights and video. She began producing for other artists more officially in 2023 (Amarante, Fuso, La Monarque). Additionally, she took the decision to claim more credit for her production work within her own artist project: she was always very involved in her own productions, but never took credit for it.
Caracol is also active on the publishing scene. Her single Flooded Field, featuring Illa J, was recently featured in Dickinson on Apple TV, and she wrote the music for a nation-wide campaign for Telus Mobility. She’s currently working on her sixth album, due in 2024. Filled with eclectic pop gems embroidered with rich vocal arrangements, the record is infused with reggae and world flavors, representing her multi-cultural background and wide musical experiences. A unique blend of beats, organic instruments, and the artist’s signature vocals.

Persistent, playful and passionate, Denise De’ion is a Juno winning producer, singer and artist. She has been writing and singing from a young age, and strategically added music production to her already robust skillset in 2007. As a young, black, female artist, Denise felt she did not have as much exposure and accessibility to music studios and beats, so she took matters into her own hands. If you had to put a traditional label on her music you may call it an R&B, pop, Caribbean, hip hop medley but in actuality it’s a vibe all on its own. A very colorful person to the core, this is reflected in both Denise’s wardrobe and personality. The bright colors and patterns she wears on the daily match her music; not dark or moody, nor happy or excited, rather a vibrant and unique palette of varying emotions - it stands out! And Denise knows how to stand out from the competition too.
Her musical journey began with her writing as a small child. Her parents got her a Yamaha keyboard and she gravitated to making up her own songs. Oftentimes just pressing her fingers on keys, trying to match the tunes she heard in her head. She also had a cousin that was in the Juno winning group In Essence, and seeing him live out his dreams was a catalyst of inspirationfor Denise to do the same. Hailing from Toronto’s west end, Denise celebrates her Jamaican and Grenadian. Knowing that she is of a small handful of black women in the GTA that produce and create their own music has played a significant role in shaping Denise’s career to date. She firmly believes that the world needs to see more strong, empowered, female powerhouses in the music scene, and through what she is doing with her career, Denise hopes to inspire women around the globe to follow suit.
Some of her most recent accomplishments include producing on Haviah Mighty’s Juno winning album Stock Exchange. In 2021 she was selected along with two other female producers for the Bacardi Music Liberates Music Campaign in partnership with Boi1da. Denise was granted the opportunity to work with and be mentored by the Grammy winning producer and release the NFT single Juice available on streaming platforms. She has also participated and won several beat battle competitions including winning Canadian Beatmakers League (now Global Beatmakers League) in 2020, the IStandard beat battle at the 2019 Ascap Music Expo in LA, and being in the top four, chosen out of thousands of entries, of the Remy Martin Producer challenge in New York.
“Sometimes I can’t find the right words, but with music I can say whatever I want. There is such a freedom in that. I’m passionate about being able to communicate that language to my listeners,” says Denise. “Above anything, I am a black female who is a producer. I am an artist and songwriter but the former drives me so much. It has become a huge part of my purpose to fill that gap. The representation of females in technical roles in music is about 2%. It’s even less as a woman of colour.”
She is set to release her self-produced EP Peace of My Soul in the first quarter of 2023.

In 2002, Natalie moved from the hometown of Buenos Aires (Argentina) to Stockholm (Sweden). Natalie had studied jazz guitar in college and vocal technique with private teachers and as such, her first occupation in Stockholm was as a private teacher for guitar and vocals and was also a session musician. Eventually, Natalie began writing original songs under the artist name of Natalie Beabella. After a few years of sharing music studios with producers, Natalie eventually decided to begin producing her own music – “why pay a producer, if I'm the one writing all the music and the arrangements. I just need to learn how to push the buttons”. This quickly grew into a full-time occupation along with Natalie’s artistry.
In 2010 Natalie funded a recording studio in central Stockholm, where she provides services such as mixing, production, recording, songwriting and artist coaching. Natalie works with many artists that range in genres – from more acoustic music to rock, pop, world, podcast, voice-overs, audiobooks and meditation music. Music produced by Natalie: “Women from the Baltic Sea” by Elisif Norrman “Affirmations” by Elisif Norrman

For Sibille’s latest album, which is released fully on February 26, she has written, recorded, played most instruments, and mixed. Additionally, from January through March, 2021, Sibille is composing music for a full play at the Swedish Royal Theater.

Heather Gibson is responsible for all non-orchestral music curation, and summer and community programming at the National Arts Centre (NAC). Heather and her team work with artists from all backgrounds -- from the most exciting new artists to the all-time greats -- to bring the best of the world to the NAC's stages, and the best of Canada to the world. Since joining the NAC team in 2016, Heather has been connecting and elevating artists via innovative and inclusive programs around the globe, including: EXPO 2020 in Dubai, which showcased the breadth and diversity of Canada’s performing arts community and brought 130 artists to the UAE over six months; COP15, the United Nations' biodiversity conference in Montreal; and the Global Network for Women Music Producers, an initiative to support women and non-binary music producers that so far totals 35 members in six countries, offering an international network for producers and a resource for artists and record labels. Heather’s commitment to the constantly evolving landscape of the arts continues by working to develop emerging performers, and deliver an equitable representation on our stages for women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ2S+ artists. In a direct and immediate response to the Covid-19 pandemic, in March 2020 Heather created the emergency artist relief fund #CanadaPerforms, which provided a season's worth of funding to nearly 700 performing artists and authors, non-profit festivals, and organizations. In the pandemic's first six months, #CanadaPerforms distributed almost a million dollars to arts workers across the country. Originally from Manitoba, Heather built her career in the performing arts in Halifax, where she was a successful artist manager, co-owner of Halifax's iconic queer listening room The Company House, and producer of multiple festivals and special events, including the Halifax Jazz Festival and In the Dead of Winter Music Festival.
“Producers are an integral part of the music industry, and of the creative process, but they work in a field that’s dominated by men. This new Global Network aims to give these amazing professionals the support they need to grow their networks and careers.”
