It is important to break down the instructions as much as possible, more than is necessary for typically-developing students. For example, with brass instruments, the first step would be to simply make a buzzing sound with their lips. Next would be to make a buzzing sound into the mouthpiece, and then with the mouthpiece on the instrument. If any of these steps are not possible, encourage the participant to engage with the instrument in any way that is comfortable for them. This can include pressing valves, feeling the vibration of the instrument, looking into the bell, and more. Celebrate any accomplishment and participation. Continue to work through the steps as the participant is able as often progress will come throughout the series.
