Celebrating National Indigenous Peoples History Month at the NAC
The National Arts Centre (NAC) is honouring the distinct perspectives and cultures of Indigenous artists throughout the month of June as part of National Indigenous History Month, including National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21. Highlights include Indigenous art on the NAC’s Kipnes Lantern, online storytelling and interviews, as well as a multitude of music performances.
Every day in June, the three-storey digital Kipnes Lantern on Elgin Street in downtown Ottawa features stunning artwork of several renowned Indigenous artists, including Germaine Arnaktauyok (Inuit, Igloolik), Christi Belcourt (Michif [Métis]) and Simon Brascoupé (Anishinaabe).
The three artists are being interviewed by Lindsay Lachance, the NAC Indigenous Theatre’s Artistic Associate, as part of series of videos posted on the NAC’s social media pages June 4, 18, and 25. The incredible artwork of Germaine Arnaktauyok is also featured in a Facebook storytelling series in English, French, and Inuktitut that will deepen understanding of Inuit creation myths.
There will interviews by NAC artistic leaders with some of today’s most outstanding Indigenous artists: on June 17, NAC Indigenous Theatre Artistic Director Kevin Loring will speak with actor-director Charles Bender (Wendat) at 11 a.m. (live on the NAC Indigenous Theatre Facebook page), while NAC Music Director Alexander Shelley will interview Polaris-winning performer Jeremy Dutcher (Tobique First Nation) as part of the NAC Orchestra’s Musically Speaking online series on June 18 at 12:30 p.m. (live on the NAC Orchestra Facebook page).
